The USDA has released the Farmer’s Market Directory API, which allows application developers access to farmer’s market information that the USDA continually updates. The information that can be searched within the database includes the market’s name, location, products available, and the types of payment accepted. The new API provides a wonderful opportunity for both mobile and enterprise app developers to create easy ways to access and use the data from a variety of devices, including smart phones and tablets. This could be especially useful to consumers who prefer to purchase groceries at farmer’s markets rather than at supermarkets. The API is part of the technological-driven initiate by the USDA (called the OneUSDA Digital Strategy) to make data more freely available.
